Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Auckland

Some people walk out of their first hyperbaric session feeling clearer in the head. Others just sleep better that night. Some notice nothing for a few visits, then suddenly recovery starts moving again.

That part matters.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not magic. It is physiology.

At VIP Health, we see a lot of people who feel stuck in recovery. Training fatigue that hangs around too long. Concussion symptoms that never fully settle. Injuries that should probably be improving faster than they are. Sometimes it is surgery recovery. Sometimes it is just months of stress, poor sleep, inflammation, and physical overload catching up all at once.

The process itself is fairly simple. You sit inside the chamber while pressure slowly builds and oxygen levels stay high. That shift in pressure helps oxygen circulate more efficiently through parts of the body that may be recovering slowly.

That pressure change is the whole point.

A lot of people think HBOT is simply “breathing oxygen”. It is not the same thing.

Hyperbaric O2 Therapy at VIP Health

We take a fairly grounded approach to hyperbaric oxygen therapy at VIP Health. No exaggerated claims. No miracle language.

Some clinics market HBOT like it fixes everything. Most experienced practitioners know recovery is rarely that simple.

Sleep matters. Training load matters. Stress matters. Circulation matters. Nutrition matters. Sometimes the nervous system is running hot for months before people even realise it.

Most people respond better when HBOT is part of a broader recovery approach instead of the only thing they rely on.

That is how we approach it.

A lot of our patients are already pushing their bodies pretty hard before they ever try hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Runners training through fatigue. People juggling long work hours and poor sleep. Fighters carrying old injuries. Gym-goers who never quite feel fully recovered between sessions. Usually recovery is the first thing that starts slipping when people keep pushing through fatigue.

What Does a Session Feel Like?

Most sessions are quiet.

You sit back inside the chamber while pressure gradually builds. The main thing people notice early on is ear pressure, similar to flying or diving underwater. Once pressure stabilises, most patients relax pretty quickly.

Some read. Some listen to music. Some fall asleep.

How often someone uses HBOT really depends on why they are coming in. Some people book occasional sessions around training, travel, or periods of high stress. Others are trying to support recovery after surgery, concussion symptoms, or longer-term fatigue issues, which usually takes a more consistent approach over time.

That is another thing not talked about enough.

HBOT tends to work cumulatively. One session may help temporarily. Repeated sessions are where people often notice more meaningful changes.

Is HBOT Right for You?

What patients usually want is honest guidance. Not hype.

At VIP Health, we explain what hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help support, how sessions are usually structured, and where HBOT fits into the bigger recovery picture. Some people use it alongside chiropractic care and rehab work. Others simply want another recovery option during periods where the body feels constantly run down.

A lot of the time, the first step is simply working out whether HBOT feels appropriate for where your recovery is currently at.

Research on Injury Recovery

Studies have shown, that for certain complex soft-tissue injuries—especially when there is significant swelling, compromised tissue oxygenation, or high risk of tissue loss—HBOT is used medically as an adjunct to reduce complications and support tissue survival. Trials in trauma (e.g., severe lower-limb injury protocols), and HBOT is often discussed, suggesting assisting with recovery in cases of acute crush injury/compartment risk or compromised tissue beds. Reference

Newer studies and reviews continue to explore exercise-related recovery outcomes, but results are variable, and soreness/performance outcomes. Reference

Supports tissue oxygenation during recovery, particularly in selected injuries where tissue oxygen supply is compromised. While evidence is mixed for routine athletic soreness; as part of your recovery plan, HBOT can be supportive in your recovery. Reference

Improve slow wound healing

Studies have shown that HBOT may support healing in selected post-surgical cases—particularly when wound oxygenation is compromised or healing is delayed—used alongside standard medical and wound-care management. Reference

HBOT increases tissue oxygen delivery, which may support recovery, energy, and resilience in some individuals. Reference

Therefore, our oxygen therapy protocols may support healing in delayed or complex wound recovery contexts when used alongside standard post-op management.Reference

Reducing brain inflammation or post-concussion injuries

HBOT is being studied for neuroinflammation and brain-injury recovery. Mechanistic and preclinical research suggests anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, but clinical outcomes can vary.

There are multiple types of concussion, sports or life concussions are the most common.

A life concussion can happen in various everyday situations, such as falls, car accidents, or workplace injuries. Unlike sports concussions, these injuries often go unnoticed, leading to prolonged symptoms and delayed recovery.

HBOT increases oxygen levels in the plasma and cellular tissue, promoting the repair of damaged brain tissues and enhancing neuroplasticity. This therapy boosts the body’s ability to heal itself, reducing inflammation, alleviating concussion symptoms, and improving cognitive function.

Emerging studies suggests that HBOT may improve certain outcomes in people with persistent symptoms after brain injury.  It may be essential to use our HBOT as part of your broader recovery plan and as part of your rehab plan and graduated return-to-activity. Reference

If you think you're suffering with post or life concussion, and you're struggling with; fatigue, headaches, difficulty sleeping, blurred or double vision, trouble thinking or focusing, dizziness, sensitivity to light, depression or irritability. These are signs your brain is still struggling.

Improving your wellbeing

Many clients pursue HBOT for general recovery and wellbeing. While wellness outcomes vary, HBOT reliably increases tissue oxygenation, and we focus on individualised goals and objective tracking rather than one-size-fits-all.

When it comes to your health and wellbeing goals, whether that's improving your sleep, reducing headaches or improving your focus and concentration, HBOT is your secret weapon to achieving better results overall.

Session times

Most sessions run for 60 minutes in the chamber, plus a few minutes either side for check-in, setup, and pressure changes. Your recommended number of sessions depends on your goals (post-injury, post-surgery support, post-concussion recovery, or wellness) and how you respond.

Comfortable, like a first class plane ride

Our HBOT is generally really comfortable. The most noticeable sensation is pressure in the ears, similar to take-off/landing on a plane, especially during the first 5–15 minutes while the chamber pressurises. You’ll be coached by our Practitioners on easy equalising techniques (swallowing, yawning, gentle ear-clearing).

Inside the chamber you can usually relax, listen to audio, breathe normally, and many people feel calm or sleepy. Afterward, some clients report feeling refreshed, while others feel a bit tired—both can be normal.

Safety is our most important aim for you

When appropriately screened and supervised, HBOT is well-tolerated, but it’s not suitable for everyone.

Common/usually mild concerns

  • Ear or sinus discomfort from pressure changes (most common)

  • Temporary fatigue

  • Temporary vision changes (usually short-term with a series

Less common but important risks

  • Oxygen toxicity (rare; protocols are designed to minimise this)

  • Lung barotrauma (rare; risk is higher with certain lung conditions)

  • Claustrophobia/anxiety (manageable with coaching and gradual exposure)

We'll take you through a thorough assessment

You’ll typically need extra screening or clearance if you have:

  • Untreated pneumothorax (generally an absolute contraindications

  • Significant lung disease, recent chest injury, or a history of spontaneous pneumothorax

  • Active sinus/ear infection, severe congestion, or difficulty equalising pressure

  • Certain implanted devices or recent procedures (we’ll check compatibility)

  • Uncontrolled seizures or other conditions your clinician flags as higher risk

  • We'll take you through a thorough assessment

  • Arrive well-hydrated and avoid heavy meals immediately beforehand. Make sure you're wearing comfortable clothes, and you might want to bring something to read. We don't recommend using your mobile phone inside the chamber, it's design to be your down time!

  • If you’re congested, tell us—equalising may be harder.

  • Bring any relevant medical notes (especially any post-operative instructions or concussion management plans) so we can align your care appropriately.

  • What can you achieve?

Whether you’re seeking faster recovery, improved cognitive clarity, enhanced athletic performance, or overall vitality, hyperbaric oxygen therapy offers a science-driven path to feeling your best.
